Ebb Tide Quilt
An exquisite quilt by Mary Schafer, signed and dated 1980. The work features a geometric pattern in navy fabric evocative of ocean tides, paired with delicate floral motifs and polka dots on an ivory background. Entirely hand-pieced, hand-quilted, and hand-embroidered, with thin cotton batting and an off-white cotton backing. The edges are finished by hand with an applied off-white fabric binding.

Mary Vida Schafer was born on April 27, 1910, in Austria-Hungary. Her family moved to the United States in 1915. She was a quilter, a collector, and a dedicated researcher of historical quilt patterns. She maintained extensive correspondence with early pattern collectors and historians, reinforcing her commitment to grounding her quiltmaking in historical accuracy. In 1988, she was honored by the Michigan Women's Foundation for her outstanding contributions to the arts.
