An exquisite quilt by Mary Schafer, signed and dated 1980. Pinwheel blocks in dark brown polka-dot cotton alternate with a delicate floral print, set against a plain cream ground finely hand-quilted in patterns. Entirely hand pieced, hand quilted, and hand embroidered, the quilt includes thin cotton batting and an off-white cotton backing, with edges finished by hand using an applied off-white fabric binding.

Mary Vida Schafer was born on April 27, 1910, in Austria-Hungary. Her family moved to the United States in 1915. She was a quilter, a collector, and a dedicated researcher of historical quilt patterns. She maintained extensive correspondence with early pattern collectors and historians, reinforcing her commitment to grounding her quiltmaking in historical accuracy. In 1988, she was honored by the Michigan Women's Foundation for her outstanding contributions to the arts.
